Nº 8 — AFTER-IMAGE. The eighth issue of THE-ICONOMIST, titled To propose / To recreate, takes as its point of departure Édouard Glissant’s notion of the aprèzan: the present as a living interval between destruction and regeneration. From this idea unfolds a reflection on what it means to create in an era where images multiply endlessly, and where visibility itself has become a form of capture. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, every image we share becomes data; analyzed, categorized, and reabsorbed into vast systems of recognition. Within this landscape, the publication suggests a different kind of response: a digital craftsmanship that moves against automation, exploring how the deliberate act of cutting, layering, and reassembling images can function as both creation and camouflage, a way of disrupting the smooth readability demanded by machines. To propose / To recreate unfolds as a moving terrain of visual thought, which is part proposal, part reconstruction. In addition to experimental texts created by THE-ICONOMIST, the edition also features selected excerpts from authors such as Naomi Klein, Thomas Pynchon, Mark Fischer, Olga Tokarczuk, Fernando Birri, among others.

EN Memoryscape, a speculative tale by THE-ICONOMIST, is a plunge into the collapse between memory and technology. A narrator drifts through feeds, notifications, algorithms, and system glitches in search of himself, but finds only echoes, noise, and screenshots of a life mediated by devices. Between buffered dreams, captcha identities, and emotions translated into data, the book unfolds a landscape where memory no longer belongs to the body but to invisible servers. Each forgotten image returns as a symptom, each notification as a shadow, each silence as a corrupted file. To escape one’s own memory becomes, then, an attempt to be reborn outside the records—an ultimate way of continuing to exist. The narrative is accompanied by a selection of 99 appropriate images.

EN Guaraná Paquera presents the record of a year-long performance staged on Instagram by visual artist and researcher Mariana Destro, constructed from a series of images, videos, found texts, and notes, shared in the platform's stories. After undergoing plastic surgery, the artist set out to investigate the modes of identification associated with the human face. Assuming the face as a fiction that directs ways of living through words, she immersed herself, during the year 2023, in an endless cycle of seeking “self-improvement,” stimulated by viewers who consumed the artist's body and life online. To reconstruct her identity, creating a new version of herself based on who she already was, she assumed the commodification of her body and image, strategically performed here. Thus, Mariana set out to photograph her daily life, post on social media, and, in accordance with the dynamics of Instagram, a platform for the production of images subject to the neoliberal ethos of productivity and consumption, interact with her followers.

EN LILLE.ME.SOFTLY is a visual diary conceived between June 27 and 30th, 2025, during zero-Editions' trip to Lille, in northern France, to participate in the Bookmarket #5 fair, promoted by the Institut pour la Photographie. As part of the Saison Brasil-France 2025 program, the project brought together seven Brazilian photo book publishers_zero-Edições, Gris, Livraria Madalena, Selo Turvo, LP Press, Lovely House, and Piscina Pública_in an exchange promoted by the Photography Book Library of the Moreira Salles Institute (São Paulo) and the Institut pour la Photographie (Lille), with support from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. The work presented in this book is constructed as a drift through the city, a sequence of visual encounters, photographic accidents, and unexpected juxtapositions. Each page operates as a fragment of a journey, but also as part of an unstable mosaic, in which images attract and repel each other. The book does not seek to portray Lille in a linear fashion, but rather to traverse it, filtered through subjective experience, the textures of its streets, and the interference of chance. Between old facades and projected shadows, reflections from shop windows and saturated patches of color, the city presents itself both as a physical place and as a mental archive. There are echoes of overlap—of times, languages, and materialities—that transform the diary into an exercise in montage, in which geography dissolves into the sequence of images.
